“I like to think of my writing practice as existing in a “heap”. The way I picture that heap changes depending on which texts I focus on. Is it a haystack in a field, a pile of laundry, a compost heap in a bin, a truckload of belongings being hauled? Underlying these images is a fascination for the textures and smells, sounds, sights and tastes which metaphors can transport, the way thoughts move to images and memories when a word is written or read.
With this project I wanted to look more closely at the way intuitive links are made between texts, and between texts and the people who write and read them. At the same time, I wanted to address these questions about my writing practice in its own terms. The result is a collection of texts which is itself held together by traces of connections made while writing and reading. A tentative boundary between languages and modes of writing emerged as I worked. This booklet, Tender Alliances, invites the reader to navigate by way of overlap, coincidence and association. It can be read straight through, from front to back, or in two parts, by sticking to one language at a time.” |
